On the 17th December 2012, a number of hailstorms developed in eastern South Australia. Some of these directly impacted on communities including Whyalla. Christmas Day 2011 unfortunately spawned at least two violent hailstorms that tracked across the northern and western suburbs during the afternoon. Known as supercell thunderstorms, these storms spawned giant hailstones to the size of tennis balls that literally damaged thousands of vehicles across affected suburbs.
